Gearbox Order Momentum Returns as Wind Build-Out Picks Up
China added about 80 GW of wind in 2025, reaching roughly 600 GW cumulative, with 16-20 MW turbines raising gearbox and gear grinding demands.
Policy Drivers Reshaping Electricity Markets and Carbon Costs
Competitive power sales for new wind and solar
Document 136, issued in February 2025 by the NDRC together with the NEA, set the stage for electricity pricing that responds more directly to market forces. Starting 1 June 2025, newly commissioned wind and PV plants sell their electricity under competitive arrangements, and price is determined by supply and demand rather than administrative benchmarks. When revenue depends on market clearing levels, every hour of availability across a multi-decade service window gains value. Purchasers have responded by applying stricter acceptance criteria to gearboxes and other drivetrain components that drive uptime.
Energy Law in force across China
China’s Energy Law entered into force on 1 January 2025, giving renewable generation and consumption a priority position within the national framework. Approvals for offshore and deep-sea projects have consequently accelerated, and the continuing rollout of large-base developments sustains long-cycle purchasing of transmission components.
CBAM exposure and access to the German market
The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism began its definitive phase in 2026, so steel and aluminium entering gear and gearbox supply chains now carry an additional carbon-related cost. Selling into the German wind industry requires CE/TÜV certification, with REACH and RoHS conformity expected as a baseline. For export quotations, both the carbon-related expense and the lead time required to secure certification should be reflected in the price and schedule.
Design Drivers: Larger Rotors Raise the Bar on Gear Accuracy
Alloy selection, case hardening and distortion control
Typical material choices for wind gearbox gearing include 18CrNiMo7-6 and 20CrMnTi. These grades are carburized and quenched to a hardness range of 58–62 HRC, and effective case depth is set between 1.5 and 3.0 mm depending on module size. The hardest part of the process is limiting distortion in large ring gears and planetary gears. Grinding allowance is commonly held in the 0.4–0.8 mm window, and rough and finish grinding are carried out as separate operations.
Ground flanks and the inspection routine
For main gearbox gearing, grinding is now the accepted production route. After grinding, profile and lead accuracy must fall within the DIN 3962 grades stated on the drawing, and flank roughness must meet the value stated on the drawing. Ahead of shipment, a gear measuring center verifies profile, lead, pitch accumulation and runout; matched pairs are then remounted on a meshing tester for confirmation. Main gearboxes used on 8–10 MW machines are generally rated beyond 3,000 kN·m, which makes flank contact accuracy and predictable load capacity essential.
Other demand sources: EV drive units and solar trackers
Wind is not the only segment generating demand for precision gearing. EV drive gears are commonly specified near DIN 5, with ground flanks and paired inspection, because traction motors now turn at more than 20,000 rpm. Growing adoption of solar trackers continues to expand requirements for slewing drives and the worm gear sets contained in them. Orders of this type tend to be placed in smaller batches while calling for higher precision, which suits a specialist precision gear manufacturer.

Order Flow: Wind Build Volumes and Gearbox Outsourcing
2025 grid connections and the current order book
Statistics from the NEA indicate that China connected roughly 80 GW of wind capacity to the grid during 2025, a figure close to 2024 levels, bringing cumulative installed capacity to about 600 GW at the close of 2025. Turbine tendering activity remained strong through the first half of 2026, and major OEMs hold order backlogs that extend into 2027.
Offshore progress and rising unit ratings
During H1 2026, several gigawatt-scale offshore projects in Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang and Fujian moved through installation and grid connection. Unit ratings continue to climb: mainstream onshore machines are now rated 8–10 MW, offshore deliveries range from 16–20 MW, and OEMs have displayed prototypes above 20 MW. Each increase in rating raises gearbox torque and drives gear modules larger.
Gearbox cost position and outsourced machining
The gearbox represents approximately 10% of a turbine’s cost, placing it among the higher-value drive components. International suppliers such as NGC keep extending their global share and revenue from overseas markets. As module sizes and ring gear diameters increase, a larger share of heat treatment and grinding is being placed with external machining partners. Facilities set up for large-module grinding and complete inspection are better positioned when those outsourcing discussions take place.
PinyiGear machines cylindrical gears, bevel gears and planetary gear sets destined for wind gearboxes, with grinding to the tolerance class stated on the drawing — see the gear products page.
