Gear Fatigue Performance and Distortion Management: Shot Peening, 20CrMnTi, 40Cr, and DIN Grade Selection

Shot peening raises carburized 20CrMnTi gear fatigue life 5x and 40Cr 6x, with Almen intensity 0.35~0.60 A mm and coverage of at least 100%.

Part I: Industry News — Shot Peening Technology Becomes Key Means for Gear Fatigue Life

Within gear production, shot peening now occupies a position of growing weight. Figures held in the knowledge base indicate that for carburized gears made from 20CrMnTi, roughly 2×10⁶ cycles of fatigue life are reached prior to peening; once peening is applied, that figure climbs to 1×10⁷ cycles — a 5× improvement. For medium-carbon Q&T gears produced from 40Cr, the gain runs from 1×10⁶ up to 6×10⁶, which equals a 6× improvement.

Such gains rest on measurement rather than on theoretical projection. Stability is greatest when coverage reaches ≥100% and Almen intensity is held within 0.35~0.60 A mm. One caution applies, however: heat treatment above 250°C must not follow peening, since residual compressive stress would otherwise be lost and the whole operation rendered pointless.

Trend Assessment: Through 2026, expectations for extended service life keep intensifying across the gear sector. Rather than remaining optional, shot peening has settled into the standard process set. Where transmission parts are destined for Europe, certification to SAE J443 / MIL-S-13165 functions almost as a mandatory condition.

Part II: Technical Knowledge Points

Knowledge 1: Three Levels of Heat Treatment Distortion Control

Among the factors that most severely reduce yield in transmission parts, heat treatment distortion ranks first. Five distortion categories are catalogued in the knowledge base:

  • Ovality distortion — the bore turns elliptical, chiefly because heating and cooling proceed unevenly
  • Taper distortion — diameters differ between the two ends, chiefly because of the cooling sequence
  • Bending/warping — the axis bends as residual stress is released
  • Tooth profile/lead distortion — the precision grade drops
  • Shrinkage/expansion — volume changes accompany phase transformation

Three areas supply the countermeasures:

① Design Stage: Wall thickness kept uniform, a material with stable hardenability selected (20CrMnTi), grinding allowance left in place, structure made symmetrical ② Process Control: Pre-oxidation 400~500°C → stepped heating → martempering (near Ms point) → oil temperature 60~80°C → tempering ≥2 times each ≥2h → deep freezing -60~-80°C ③ Tooling: Shaft parts vertical hanging, disc parts flat on support, thin-walled ring gears use dedicated quenching dies

Practical Significance: Where distortion is held in check effectively, first-pass yield at DIN Grade 7 can rise from 60% to beyond 85%. Every unit of rework avoided converts directly into profit.

Knowledge 2: DIN Precision Grades & Export Gear Standard Matching

Precision grade, individual tolerances, composite tolerances, gear pair tolerances and backlash tolerances are all addressed across the DIN 3961~3967 series.

For transmission parts shipped to Europe, the following standard matching is advised:

Corresponding ISOApplication ScenarioDIN Grade
5~6Precision machine tools/aerospace gears5~6
7~8Automotive transmissions7~8
7~9General industrial gearboxes7~9

Prior to issuing an export quotation, the DIN/ISO/AGMA grade correspondence the customer expects has to be pinned down. Should the precision grades fail to line up, the gears may be perfectly made yet still incur extremely heavy return costs.

Part III: Today’s Reflection

Shot peening + heat treatment distortion control — these two processes are actually a pair of opposites:

Distortion is what heat treatment seeks to restrain, whereas shot peening itself constitutes cold working deformation (controlled plastic deformation, admittedly). On the shop floor, the peening step sits after heat treatment and ahead of finish grinding: matrix hardness is secured first by heat treatment, surface strengthening follows through peening, and finish grinding brings the part to size last. Get that order wrong and the parts become scrap.

This prompts a broader reconsideration: when proposals are drafted for customers, the sequence of the process route outweighs the specific parameters. A wrong parameter can still be corrected, but a wrong sequence carries rework costs that are far too steep. Going forward, proposal documents ought to place the “process route diagram” on the opening page, relegating parameter details to an appendix.
