Technical Notes
Note A: ISO 6336 Strength Checks — Two Simultaneous Requirements
A gear pair has to clear two separate hurdles: the flank must resist contact stress (σ_H ≤ σ_HP, guarding against pitting and wear), while the root must resist bending stress (σ_F ≤ σ_FP, guarding against cracking and tooth fracture).
- Contact-side requirement — σ_H = Z_H·Z_E·Z_ε·√(…)
- Governing terms: Z_H (zone factor), Z_E (elasticity), K_Hβ (load distribution)
- What happens on failure: pitting, wear
- Bending-side requirement — σ_F = (F_t/(b·m_n))·Y_Fa·Y_Sa·…
- Governing terms: Y_Fa (tooth form), Y_Sa (stress correction), Y_ε (contact ratio)
- What happens on failure: tooth breakage, cracks
Worked example: take a 20CrMnTi carburized gear (m_n=3, Z=23/74, T=200N·m). Running ISO 6336 gives roughly 720 MPa contact stress against a 1364 MPa allowable, and about 258 MPa bending stress against a 667 MPa allowable. Those margins hold up — provided the surface treatment is executed to specification.
What this means: calculations alone do not guarantee field performance. Case depth, residual stress and shot peening decide how long the part actually lasts. A flawless drawing is worthless when surface processing falls short.
Note B: Shot Peening — Multiplying Gear Fatigue Life by Five
In this process, steel shot is fired at the tooth flank at high velocity. The result is a compressive residual stress layer (≥ 800 MPa) near the surface, which offsets the tensile loading the gear sees in operation.
| Improvement Factor | Gear Type | Non-Peened Life (cycles) | Peened Life (cycles) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5× | 20CrMnTi Carburized | 2×10⁶ | 1×10⁷ |
| 6× | 40Cr Q&T | 1×10⁶ | 6×10⁶ |
Standard process window (PinyiGear specification):
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Shot Media | Cast steel shot φ0.6~1.2mm |
| Almen Intensity | 0.35~0.60 A (A-type strip for gears) |
| Coverage | ≥100% (fluorescent/microscopic inspection) |
| Caution | No heat treatment >250°C after peening, otherwise residual stress will be released and the effect is lost |
Critical control point: Almen intensity is the decisive quality metric, and the strip type must match the part. Thin-walled components call for N-type strips; C-type strips suit heavy-duty work; general gears fall in between and use A-type. At PinyiGear, every production batch is signed off against A-type strip readings.

Gear Design Moves Toward Combining Strength with Predicted Life
Where gearboxes were once specified simply to clear a strength threshold, the industry is moving toward design driven by fatigue-life prediction across the whole service period. ISO 6336:2024 tightens the permissible stress coefficients for flank contact and root bending, and places greater weight on surface integrity — final behaviour depends as much on how well surface strengthening steps (shot peening, carburizing, nitriding) actually perform as on the original calculation.
Market signal: simply inflating safety factors — “over-design” — is giving way to life-matched design anchored in measured data. For smaller gear makers this is both a hurdle and a chance to stand apart.
Closing Reflection
Shot peening as PinyiGear’s quiet differentiator
Q37 shot blasting and PS sandblasting equipment are already installed on our floor:
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Front-loaded design | Include “shot peening” as standard configuration in customer quotation/proposal phase |
| Data-driven marketing | Embed 5× fatigue life improvement data into product brochures and quotation response templates |
| ISO 6336 verification integration | Provide dual evidence chain of “ISO 6336 design validation × shot peening reinforcement” |
In short: premium material grades, careful design work and surface strengthening together form the full competitive package.
