Guide to Choosing Materials for Precision Gears

Comparative analysis of the characteristics of 7 common gear materials, providing scientific material selection recommendations based on load conditio

How to Choose the Right Gear Material

Material choice for precision gears comes down to matching load, precision grade, size and cost. The following principles summarize the usual approach:

  1. Where loads are heavy, 20CrMnTi or 20CrNiMo is the appropriate choice.
  2. Where precision requirements are high (DIN grade 5 or above), 20CrMnTi or 20CrNiMo is recommended.
  3. For large-sized gears (Φ>500mm), materials with good hardenability should be selected.
  4. Provided the application requirements are met, cost-effective materials take priority.

Gear Material Grades and Their Properties

The table below lists the common grades used for precision gears, together with their characteristics, heat treatment, hardness and typical applications.

  • Material Grade 20CrMnTi: Good hardenability, minimal deformation
    • Heat Treatment: Carburizing and quenching
    • Hardness: HRC 58~63
    • Application: Medium-to-high load gears
  • Material Grade 20CrNiMo: Better hardenability, high toughness
    • Heat Treatment: Carburizing and quenching
    • Hardness: HRC 58~62
    • Application: Relatively high impact loads
  • Material Grade 40Cr: Good overall performance, low cost
    • Heat Treatment: Quenching and tempering + high-frequency induction hardening
    • Hardness: HB 240~280
    • Application: Medium-load gears
  • Material Grade 42CrMo: High strength, good hardenability
    • Heat Treatment: Quenching and tempering + high-frequency induction hardening
    • Hardness: HB 260~320
    • Application: Heavy-duty gears
  • Material Grade 45# steel: Low cost, good machinability
    • Heat Treatment: Quenching and tempering / high-frequency induction hardening
    • Hardness: HB 200~250
    • Application: Low-speed light-load gears
