Preparing a Gear Enquiry: Data, Type Selection and Review Flow

Preparing a Gear Enquiry: Data, Type Selection and Review Flow

What to prepare before requesting a gear quotation — parameter checklist, comparison of common gear types, and how a drawing is reviewed.

A quotation can be produced faster when the drawing and the operating conditions are submitted together, because the engineering team is then able to examine geometry, accuracy grade, material and heat treatment before pricing. The purpose of this page is to set out the information to gather and to explain how the main gear types differ. It remains a preparation aid only: the drawing and the duty are what any quotation is built on.

How a request is handled

  1. Drawing and duty are received.
  2. Engineering review: geometry, accuracy grade, material and heat treatment, manufacturability.
  3. Process route and inspection plan are agreed.
  4. Quotation is issued against the reviewed route.

Data to gather before quoting

  • Module m: Tooth size and the whole geometry chain
    • Typical form: 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5
  • Number of teeth z1 / z2: Ratio and pitch diameter
    • Typical form: z1 = 20, z2 = 60
  • Pressure angle α: Flank shape and contact ratio
    • Typical form: 20° standard profile
  • Helix angle β: Axial force and noise behaviour
    • Typical form: 0° spur, 8–45° helical
  • Profile shift x: Undercut avoidance, sliding balance
    • Typical form: −0.5 to +1.0
  • Accuracy grade and standard: Which tolerance tables apply
    • Typical form: DIN 3962 / ISO 1328-1 / GB/T 10095.1
  • Tooth thickness and backlash: Fit and heat generation
    • Typical form: DIN 3967
  • Material and heat treatment: Load capacity and life
    • Typical form: 20CrMnTi carburized, 42CrMo quenched and tempered
  • Hardness range: Wear resistance
    • Typical form: e.g. HRC 58–62
  • Face width b: Load distribution across the tooth
    • Typical form: b = 20 mm
  • Center distance a: Housing layout
    • Typical form: a = 80 mm
  • Bore, keyway, spline: Mounting interface
    • Typical form: Φ20H7, 6×22×25
  • Duty: Torque, speed, hours, shock, lubrication, temperature
    • Typical form: T = 120 N·m, n = 1450 rpm
  • Quantity and timing: Process route, tooling and inspection plan
    • Typical form: single part to series production

Gear types and their behaviour

  • Type Spur gear: Simplest form, no axial force, more noise as speed rises
    • Typical applications: pumps, general gearboxes
  • Type Helical gear: Higher load capacity and quieter running, at the cost of axial force
    • Typical applications: reducers, machine tool drives
  • Type Internal gear: Compact and coaxial
    • Typical applications: planetary sets, couplings
  • Type Rack and pinion: Converts rotation into linear motion
    • Typical applications: gantries, presses, steering
  • Type Bevel gear: Intersecting shafts
    • Typical applications: right-angle drives, differentials
  • Type Worm gear pair: High ratio in a single stage, often self-locking
    • Typical applications: lifts, indexing tables
  • Type Sprocket and timing pulley: Large center distances without strict meshing accuracy
    • Typical applications: conveyors, packaging lines
  • Type Planetary gear set: Coaxial, high torque density
    • Typical applications: servo reducers, robotics

An accuracy grade carries meaning only when the standard it belongs to is stated, since the same number corresponds to different tolerance values under DIN, ISO and GB. The systems are compared in gear accuracy standards.

When the data set is incomplete

  • Torque and speed alone are sufficient to begin: send the duty, and the geometry can be derived first and confirmed with you.
  • Without a drawing, a sample, a 3D model and the mounting interface are enough to start.
  • If the accuracy grade is undecided, describe the application; a grade can be proposed and confirmed before manufacturing.
  • For a replacement part, a photo together with caliper measurements of the main dimensions shortens the review.
